Tucked into a bend along the Chippewa River, facing the Williams-Blackburn Preserve just beyond, the PohlCat Golf Course holds 18 holes of complex, scenic golf alongside a variety of amenities for every golfer, just northeast of downtown Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Designed by longtime Mt. Pleasant resident and former PGA Tour professional Dan Pohl, the course is a well-known destination for golf in the state, as well as its Mt. Pleasant community, with everything from a one-of-a-kind golf course design to a practice facility and special events services offered onsite.
“Having played all over the world in top quality golf courses, as a public golf course [PohlCat] offers everything: a great driving range, a pro shop and den, and courteous staff,” Dan Pohl said. “It has those things that you expect from an upscale public facility, but the golf course is also playable for all handicaps, and it varies from hole to hole.”
The variance by hole is a good way to keep the course fresh to the eye, Pohl added, noting that from the fairway to the tee box, golfers don’t see the same thing twice. The design makes for an enjoyable round that can be challenging at times, and golfers of all kinds are wanting to get out and take advantage, especially as the weather stays consistently warm.
Luckily, the Mt. Pleasant area holds a wealth of other summer activities, offered through a walkable downtown dotted with dining destinations and a world-class casino with a full roster of events in its outdoor venue.
“Mt. Pleasant is a really interesting place, because you have really good golf courses in a small community and then for a small town it has great restaurants like Mountain Town Station, and a lot of good hotel complexes. Of course, the Soaring Eagle Casino is one to see too,” Pohl said.
This summer, the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort holds a well-stocked summer concert series—for which PohlCat is the VIP tent sponsor—as well as events like the Back to the Bricks Car Show on Friday, June 4th. This event, which is the first stop of its 2021 promotional tour, will feature hundreds of classic cars as well as food trucks, a roaming photo booth, a DJ, and a live, onsite broadcast with 95.3 WCFX radio station. Discover more summer events as well as options for lodging at the Mt. Pleasant Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s website. These can include everything from quaint B&Bs to tried-and-true local chains like the Quality Inn, located just west of the casino.
